Visit both in a couple of hours between darshan sessions; the car museum in particular delights people who arrived expecting only a temple.
The Nethravathi
The river runs below the town and bathing in it before darshan is the traditional sequence, with ghats and changing facilities at the bank. The Nethravathi rises in the Ghats above Sakleshpur and meets the Kumaradhara at Uppinangady on the road in, which is worth noting as you cross it. Visit in the early morning when the ghats are busy with pilgrims and the light on the water is at its best. Kukke Subramanya
Around sixty kilometres away, Kukke Subramanya is the other great shrine of this district and the two are almost always visited together. Subramanya is worshipped here in the form associated with serpents, and the temple is the principal place in South India for the Sarpa Samskara and Ashlesha Bali rituals performed for Naga Dosha - which brings pilgrims from across the country on specific dates. Tempo Traveller fares around Rs 15,500. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card. A receipt is issued within 30 minutes and the balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance. For the Laksha Deepotsava and other peak dates a higher advance may be required.
The 12 seater suits nine or ten passengers with luggage, and the 14, 16 and 18 seaters follow the same rule of leaving a row spare. Our advice on this route in particular is to size up rather than fill every seat, because the Shiradi ghat section is more comfortable with room to move. Below eight passengers a car is cheaper; above eighteen we move you to a mini bus. Share your headcount and we will tell you honestly which is the better value.
Traditional attire is required at the Manjunatha Swamy temple, and mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside, so brief your group before arrival rather than at the gate. The free meal service is genuine, runs every day at scale, and is offered to every visitor without question. The temple trust also provides accommodation for pilgrims. The same vehicle and driver stay with you throughout, covering Dharmasthala, Southadka, Kukke Subramanya and, on longer itineraries, Udupi, Kollur and the coast, returning up the Charmadi ghat through Horanadu or Sringeri if you want the Malnad circuit as well. If you are travelling for Sarpa Samskara or Ashlesha Bali at Kukke, tell us at enquiry stage, since those rituals are booked ahead and start early and the day has to be planned backwards from them.
No. The route stays entirely within Karnataka, so no interstate permit or border tax applies, which makes billing on this corridor simpler and cheaper than our Kerala and Tamil Nadu routes. Permits become relevant only if your itinerary extends beyond the state. Tolls and parking are still billed at actuals as on every route.
We do not operate sleeper bus services. Every vehicle we run is seated configuration with push-back seats. The Shiradi ghat has been concreted and is in far better condition than its old reputation suggests, but it remains a forested descent that deserves a steady pace, and it can be slow in heavy monsoon. We schedule departures so the ghat is driven in daylight, and where a group wants to split the journey we plan a halt at Hassan or Sakleshpur rather than driving it at night.
