Places to Visit in Anantapur
Lepakshi and the Hanging Pillar

Puttaparthi and Prasanthi Nilayam
Around forty kilometres east of the highway near Penukonda, Puttaparthi was a small village until it became the base of Sathya Sai Baba, and it is now a town built around the Prasanthi Nilayam ashram with visitors from across the world. The complex includes the samadhi, the Sai Kulwant Hall, the Chaitanya Jyoti Museum and a planetarium, alongside the super speciality hospital and university that were established here. Visit for the ashram, which operates its own timings and conventions - dress modestly, expect silence in the main areas, and check the current darshan and visiting arrangements before you travel, as they are set by the trust.
Penukonda Fort
When Hampi fell in 1565 the Vijayanagara court retreated here, and Penukonda served as the capital for decades afterward - which is why a small town in southern Anantapur holds a fortress of this scale. The Gagan Mahal, a two-storey Indo-Islamic palace, survives in good condition, alongside temples, the Sher Khan mosque and the Babayya Dargah, with fortifications climbing the hill above. Visit for the Gagan Mahal and the sense of a capital in exile. It is a short detour off the highway and takes about an hour, and it pairs naturally with Lepakshi into a single Vijayanagara day.
Thimmamma Marrimanu
Near Kadiri, around a hundred kilometres east of Anantapur, stands a banyan tree whose canopy is recognised as the largest of any single tree in the world - it covers something in the order of five acres, with thousands of aerial roots that have become trunks, so that walking into it feels less like approaching a tree than entering a forest that happens to be one organism. A small shrine to Thimmamma sits beneath it. Visit if you have a full day and an interest in the genuinely unusual; it is a long drive from the city for a single sight, but there is nothing else like it in India.
Tadipatri and the Vijayanagara Temples
Tadipatri, around fifty kilometres northeast of Anantapur on the Penna river, holds two temples that ought to be far better known than they are. The Bugga Ramalingeswara temple has gopurams covered in carved stone of remarkable density, with the sanctum sitting below river level and a spring feeding it. The Chintala Venkataramana temple has a stone chariot and carved pillars of a quality that stands comparison with Hampi. Visit for the carving. These are among the finest Vijayanagara works surviving anywhere and they receive almost no visitors, which is both a shame and the reason to go.
Gooty, Rayadurgam and Kadiri
Three more forts and a temple for anyone spending real time in the district. Gooty, on the highway north of Anantapur, is a Vijayanagara and later Maratha hill fort on a steep granite outcrop, held by Murari Rao and taken by Hyder Ali after a long siege. Rayadurgam, to the west, is a substantial hill fort with a series of temples on the ascent. Kadiri holds the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, a significant Vijayanagara foundation with a well-known annual brahmotsavam. Visit any of these if the district rather than the city is your destination - collectively they make Anantapur one of the more rewarding fort circuits in South India.

This is the easiest exit from Bangalore of any route we operate. NH 44 runs north past the international airport on six lanes from the start, and the airport traffic thins out beyond Devanahalli. Our drivers aim to be past the airport before 6:15 AM on a business departure, though this route is forgiving in a way most are not - there is no gate to make and no ghat to clear in daylight. Devanahalli is worth knowing about even without stopping: Tipu Sultan was born in the fort here in 1751 and the walls and bastions still stand a short distance off the highway, largely ignored by the traffic passing the airport. Chikkaballapur follows with the Nandi Hills rising to the west - the range where the Arkavathi, Palar, Ponnaiyar, Papagni and Chitravathi all rise, which is an unusual thing for one hill to manage.
Kodikonda
Border Town of the Deccan
Fifty kilometres of fast divided highway across increasingly dry country - this is the transition from the Karnataka plateau into Rayalaseema, and the landscape thins visibly. Bagepalli is the last Karnataka town, a market centre with little to detain a traveller, and the Andhra Pradesh border follows at Kodikonda where the checkpost and toll plaza sit. The interstate permit is presented here, arranged by us in advance so it is a formality rather than a delay. For most travellers the notable thing about this stretch is how quick it is - the highway is excellent, the traffic is moderate, and a hundred and ten kilometres passes in not much over an hour. It is also where the Lepakshi turn comes up, a short distance beyond the border.
Penukonda
Second Capital of Vijayanagara
The Lepakshi turn is around fifteen kilometres off the highway and it is the single best detour available on any road out of Bangalore. The Veerabhadra temple holds the hanging pillar, the great ceiling murals and, outside, a monolithic Nandi carved from one boulder. Ninety minutes covers it properly, and on a leisure trip it should be in the plan rather than considered. Penukonda comes next, and it is two things at once. Historically it is the fortress the Vijayanagara empire retreated to after Hampi fell, with the Gagan Mahal and the hill fortifications still standing. Commercially it is now the site of a major automobile plant and the supplier belt around it, which is why a share of our bookings on this route stop here rather than continuing. For business travellers this is the destination, at around 145 kilometres and two and a half hours from Bangalore.
Anantapur
Groundnut Capital of India
Sixty kilometres of continuing excellent highway through open, dry country. This is groundnut land - the district produces more of the crop than anywhere in India - and in season the fields and the drying yards along the road make that obvious. The Puttaparthi turn comes off this stretch to the east, around forty kilometres to the ashram town. Anantapur itself is a working district headquarters rather than a tourist city: an administrative and market centre in one of the driest parts of the country, built around the Anantasagaram tank that gave it its name. It has the services a traveller needs - fuel, hotels, hospitals, food - and it is the practical base for the district, which is where the real interest lies.
