Pagoda Point
On the eastern side of the plateau, Pagoda Point takes its name from stone cairns stacked in pagoda form by earlier visitors, with a Rama temple now on the site. It looks out over a different valley from the Lady Seat viewpoints - deeper, greener and with the Servarayan range behind. Visit at sunrise if you can manage it, since this side catches the early light and the valley mist below is at its best in the first hour. It is around five kilometres from the lake on good road, and it is the counterpart to Lady Seat rather than a repeat of it.
Servarayan Temple
At around 5,325 feet, the Servarayan temple marks the highest point in the Shevaroy Hills and gives the range its name. The shrine itself is a small cave temple dedicated to Servarayan and Kaveri, reached by a short walk from the parking area, and it is a low-key place rather than a grand one. The reason to go is the view, which on a clear morning takes in the whole plateau and a long way beyond. Visit early, before the cloud builds. The approach road passes through coffee estate country and is one of the more attractive short drives in the district.
Kiliyur Falls
The waterfall drops around ninety metres into the valley below the plateau, fed by the overflow from Yercaud Lake, and it is reached by a path and a flight of steps down from the road - a walk of twenty to thirty minutes each way that is steeper coming back than going down. Visit between July and December when there is genuine water; outside that window it reduces considerably and the walk is not worth it. Footwear matters here, the steps get slippery after rain, and the path is not suitable for anyone unsteady. It is the one attraction in Yercaud that asks something of you.
The Loop Road and the Coffee Estates
Yercaud has been coffee country since the British planted it in the nineteenth century, and the plateau is covered in coffee under silver oak shade alongside orange, pepper, jackfruit and banana. The thirty-kilometre Loop Road circles the plateau through this country and through small settlements and forest, and it is the best thing to do in Yercaud that is not a viewpoint. Several estates offer plantation walks and stays. Visit in April if you can, when the coffee flowers and the whole plateau smells of it. A ninth-century hill fort built on a granite outcrop is visible from the highway, and the KRP Dam catchment nearby makes a quiet break point. This is also where Chennai-bound traffic peels off at Rayakottai and the road south thins noticeably. There is a good cluster of highway restaurants around the bypass, and on a short route like this one there is no reason to rush past them.
Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
Dharmapuri is an agricultural district centre known regionally for mango and tamarind. The significant draw nearby is Hogenakkal, forty-five kilometres east, where the Cauvery drops through a gorge and coracle rides run below the falls. Yes, comfortably. There are twenty numbered hairpin bends over roughly thirty kilometres, with sweeping curves between them and a good surface. It is considerably gentler than the thirty-six bends of the Kalhatti ghat to Ooty and gentler than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road — drivers who run all three consistently rate Yercaud the easiest. Unlike some hill routes in our network we do not recommend stepping down a vehicle size here. It is still a hill road with oncoming buses, so our drivers take it at a measured pace and in daylight where the schedule allows.
That depends on the property, and it is the single most useful question you can ask us before booking. A good share of Yercaud accommodation is estate bungalows and homestays reached by narrow, often unsurfaced lanes off the plateau roads. A 13 seater will usually make it; a 16 or 17 seater sometimes will not, and the alternative is walking in from the main road with luggage. Send us the property name at the enquiry stage and we will confirm what can reach the door before you commit to a vehicle size. This is not something we want either of us discovering on arrival.
Urbania fare starts around Rs 18,700. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
More than most people expect. The attractions are spread across a thirty-kilometre loop — Lady Seat on one side of the plateau, Pagoda Point on the other, the Servarayan temple up a coffee-estate road, Kiliyur below the rim — and local transport on the plateau is thin, so the vehicle stays with your group throughout. A proper two-day itinerary covering the viewpoints, the temple, Kiliyur and the Loop Road will run well over a hundred kilometres of local driving on top of the 450 km return. We build that into weekend quotes rather than letting it surface at settlement.
Our Urbania fleet runs from 8 up to 17 seats, and as a working rule you should book one seat more than your headcount. Groups of eight to ten take the 9 or 10 seater, eleven to thirteen the 13 seater, and fourteen to seventeen the 15, 16 or 17 seater. Above seventeen we run two Urbanias rather than one coach on this route, since both the ghat and the estate approach lanes favour smaller vehicles. We do not operate a sleeper bus service — on a five-hour daytime run to a hill station the question rarely arises, but we would rather say so plainly.
It depends what you want. Yercaud is smaller, quieter, cheaper and far closer to Bangalore — five hours against seven for Ooty — and the ghat is easier. What it does not have is the scale of attractions, the tea estates or the infrastructure of the Nilgiris, and visitors who arrive expecting Ooty are sometimes underwhelmed. Treat it as what it is: a small, cool, green plateau with good views, coffee estates and very little to do, two and a half hours closer than the alternatives. For a group taking a two-night weekend that is often exactly right.
It is feasible for a fit group with an early start — five hours up, four or five hours on the plateau, five hours back — but it makes for a thirteen or fourteen hour day and you will see the viewpoints and little else. Given that the whole appeal of Yercaud is being close enough to make a proper weekend, a night on the plateau is a much better use of the same drive, and for a group of fifteen the case is stronger still. If a day trip is what your schedule allows, leave by 5:30 AM and prioritise Lady Seat, Pagoda Point and the lake.
Yes, and it is the most natural addition on this corridor. Hogenakkal sits around forty-five kilometres east of Dharmapuri, which is directly on your return line, so the detour adds roughly ninety minutes plus your time at the falls rather than requiring a separate trip. The Cauvery drops through a gorge there and coracle rides run below the falls, at their best from August through January. Tell us at the quotation stage so the kilometres and the day plan account for it, and note that coracle charges are paid on site.
Yes. The road crosses into Tamil Nadu shortly after Attibele, and an interstate permit is required for a commercial vehicle. We arrange it in advance so nothing is held up at the border, and it is quoted as a separate line at actual rather than folded into the base fare. It scales with seating capacity, so a 17 seater carries a higher permit line than a 13 seater — worth knowing when you are choosing between two sizes for a group of fourteen. We show both figures at quotation.
A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your date, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes. Included in the fare: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and plateau running is part of that total. Boating charges at the lake, viewpoint and parking fees and plantation tour costs are paid on site. For the Summer Festival in May and for long weekends, a higher advance may be requested.
No, Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently, and for college and school groups a group policy is usually inexpensive and often required by the institution. As for timing: October to June, which is a longer usable window than most South Indian hill stations offer. April and May are pleasant on the plateau even when the plains below are at their hottest, and the coffee flowers in April. The Summer Festival in May is the busiest period. The monsoon makes the hairpin bends slippery and the viewpoints cloudy, though Kiliyur Falls is at its best from July through December.
