Places to Visit in Kochi

Fort Kochi and the Chinese Fishing Nets

Fort Kochi and the Chinese Fishing Nets

The cantilevered fishing nets along the Fort Kochi shoreline are the image of the city - large shore-operated lift nets, introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan by tradition, still worked by teams of fishermen and best watched at sunrise or sunset. Behind them, Fort Kochi is a walkable quarter of Portuguese, Dutch and British buildings, with St Francis Church, where Vasco da Gama was originally buried in 1524 before his remains were returned to Portugal - the oldest European church in India. Visit on foot over a half day. The quarter is small, the light in the late afternoon is exceptional, and vehicles are better parked at the edge than driven through the lanes.

Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town

Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town

The Mattancherry Palace, often called the Dutch Palace, was built by the Portuguese around 1555 as a gift to the Raja of Kochi and later renovated by the Dutch. Its murals are the reason to go - some of the finest in India, covering the walls of the bedchambers with scenes from the Ramayana and Puranic subjects in dense mineral colour. Adjoining it, Jew Town runs down to the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 and the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth, with hand-painted Chinese floor tiles and Belgian glass chandeliers. The lane between them is lined with antique and spice shops. Note that the synagogue closes on Fridays and Saturdays and on Jewish holidays.

Marine Drive and the Backwaters

Marine Drive and the Backwaters

Marine Drive is the promenade along the Ernakulam waterfront, facing the harbour, and it is where the modern city gathers in the evening - a walkway, the Rainbow Bridge, and ferries crossing to Fort Kochi and Vypin. The public ferry is the cheapest and most enjoyable way to move between the islands, and it beats driving around by a considerable margin. From here the wider backwater system opens south toward Alleppey and Kumarakom, and houseboat trips can be picked up from Kochi itself for anything from a few hours to overnight. Visit at dusk. For a group with a vehicle, the ferry-and-walk combination through Fort Kochi is genuinely better than trying to drive the quarter.

Cherai Beach and Vypin

Cherai Beach and Vypin

Around twenty-five kilometres north on Vypin island, Cherai is a long stretch of shallow, relatively calm water backed by coconut palms, with a lagoon on the landward side - one of the few places where you can see backwater and sea within a few hundred metres. Dolphins are occasionally seen offshore. Visit for a half day if the itinerary allows, particularly with families, since the water is gentler than most Kerala beaches. Vypin is reached by bridge or by the vehicle ferry from Fort Kochi. The drive up the island is pleasant and there are Chinese nets along the backwater side that are far less crowded than the famous ones.

Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura

Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura

Sixteen kilometres from the city, the Hill Palace was the seat of the Kochi royal family, a complex of over forty buildings in traditional architecture set in landscaped grounds with a deer park, and it now houses the largest archaeological museum in Kerala. The collection includes the royal crown and ornaments, paintings, sculpture, epigraphy, manuscripts and coins covering the long history of the Kochi kingdom. Visit for the collection and for the grounds, which are a genuine relief from the city. It is closed on Mondays. This is the best single answer for a rainy afternoon in Kochi, and it is consistently underrated by visitors who never leave Fort Kochi.

Kathakali, Kalaripayattu and Athirappilly

Kathakali, Kalaripayattu and Athirappilly

Kochi is the easiest place in Kerala to see Kathakali properly - several theatres run daily evening performances with the elaborate make-up applied on stage beforehand, which is half the experience, and the same venues often stage Kalaripayattu, the Kerala martial art. Book ahead in season. Further out, Athirappilly Falls lies around seventy kilometres north-east near Chalakudy, on the road you drove in on: the largest waterfall in Kerala at roughly twenty-five metres and eighty metres wide, spectacular from June through January and much reduced by March. It is a full day from Kochi, or better still built into the inbound journey as a detour rather than a separate trip.

Tempo Traveller Packages for the Kochi Route

Nothing here is a fixed menu. Every quotation is built around group size, luggage and how many days you are willing to give the drive, but almost every enquiry on this corridor falls into one of the five shapes below.

Family and Wedding Package

The dominant booking type on a route where flying is the obvious alternative: families carrying more than an aircraft allows, families with elderly members for whom two airports are more trouble than one long drive, and Kerala wedding parties travelling together. The 17 and 18 seater variants are the usual choice, and on 550 kilometres the boot and overhead capacity is the reason as often as the headcount. We plan these with two proper halts rather than one, at Salem and Palakkad, and we will suggest splitting the drive across two days where the group would be better for it. Drivers on family bookings are chosen for patience with the extended halts a long day needs.

Two-Day Journey Package

The version of this trip we most often recommend for groups and the one competitors do not offer. Breaking the drive at Coimbatore or Thrissur turns a punishing eleven-hour day into two comfortable half-days, and it opens the route up: the Isha Yoga Center outside Coimbatore, Malampuzha at Palakkad, the Vadakkumnathan temple at Thrissur and Athirappilly on the final approach all become possible rather than theoretical. For a group of fifteen the case is stronger than for a couple, because fifteen people arriving worn out is a worse outcome than two, and the additional cost spread across the group is smaller than most people expect once you account for what a single-day run does to the arrival evening.

Budget Package

For groups whose priority is the lowest defensible per-head figure on a long drop. Spread across twelve or thirteen passengers this route compares well against fifteen air tickets once airport transfers at both ends and excess baggage are counted, and the door-to-door convenience is not a small thing with luggage. Budget means a standard AC 12 seater tempo traveller bangalore variant and a direct single-day itinerary. It does not mean an older vehicle or a less experienced driver, since fleet and driver standards do not change between tiers. On this route we will still tell you honestly when a flight is the better answer.

Corporate and Relocation Package

For institutional travel where flying does not suit, conference movements, and the household relocations that make up a real share of traffic on this corridor. The 17 and 18 seater variants take a family’s worth of belongings alongside the people. Documentation is handled up front: GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice at quotation stage for purchase-order approval, monthly consolidated billing and thirty-day credit terms for signed accounts. On a route with active roadworks we quote an arrival window rather than a single time, and for genuinely time-critical travel we will say plainly that a flight is the better answer. Our corporate travels bangalore desk handles ongoing requirements and our outstation tempo traveller bangalore team builds the itinerary.

Luxury Package

For senior family groups, guest hosting and anyone who would rather spend eleven hours comfortably. This tier covers our 9 to 13 seater luxury tempo traveller bangalore range with high-back recliners, footrests, reading lights, blackout curtains and per-seat charging, and extends to the Force Urbania. On the longest route in our network the case is simply endurance: seat comfort and climate control stop being cosmetic somewhere around hour seven, and this is the tier we most often recommend where older passengers are travelling or where the group intends to do anything at all on the evening they arrive.

Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment

Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for this corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged and everything inside it is stated before you confirm. Twenty percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.

Included in the quoted fare

•     Base fare and fuel charges

•     Driver allowance

Not included in the quoted fare

•     Toll and parking charges

•     Interstate tax and permit charges

•     Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra

•     Final rental calculated on total kilometres and hours, garage to garage

•     GST

Three points matter here more than on shorter routes. First, tolls are substantial. This is one of the most heavily tolled corridors in South India, and they are billed at actual rather than estimated, so ask for the expected figure at quotation stage and treat an unusually low all-inclusive quote with caution. Second, the Kerala interstate permit and entry charges at Walayar are quoted as a separate line at actual and arranged in advance; note that permit charges scale with seating capacity, so an 18 seater carries a higher figure than a 12 seater and we quote it before you choose the vehicle rather than after. Third, garage-to-garage billing means the total covers the vehicle running from and returning to our Bangalore garage, which across a 550 kilometre one-way route is a very significant share of the figure. We state that plainly at quotation rather than discovering it with you at settlement, and it is the single biggest reason a one-way drop on this route costs what it does.

Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on the longest route in our network we recommend it more strongly than on short trips. We also do not operate sleeper coaches; the fleet on this route is seated tempo travellers in the 8 to 18 band, which is worth stating plainly given that some groups ask about overnight running on a drive this length.

Our Services from Bangalore and Mysore

Tejas Tours and Travels runs a full ground-transport fleet out of Bangalore and Mysore, and every service below is available on this corridor as well as on every other route we operate.

Cab Service: Four to seven seater sedans and SUVs including Etios, Dzire, Innova, Innova Crysta, Fortuner and the luxury range up to Rolls-Royce Ghost. Our premium car rentals in bangalore fleet covers car rental bangalore, luxury car rental bangalore and premium cab requirements, and for this route specifically our bangalore to kochi cab page carries the four to seven seater option.

Tempo Traveller Service: The 8 to 18 seater band, standard and luxury tiers, every vehicle air-conditioned. Our luxury tempo traveller bangalore fleet handles tt vehicle requirements with captain seating, overhead racks and full standing headroom, and on a route this long the seating standard matters more than anywhere else we operate.

Force Urbania and Luxury Volvo Bus: Our force urbania rent bangalore fleet runs 13 to 17 seater configurations, with urbania on rent bangalore a strong long-haul choice. For group comfort across 550 kilometres, our volvo bus rental bangalore service covers volvo luxury bus and luxury bus hire on Volvo and Benz coaches, and on this route that upgrade earns its cost.

Corporate Travels: Managed transport for companies. Our corporate travels bangalore desk provides corporate cab service bangalore and corporate car rental bangalore with GST invoicing, purchase-order workflows and monthly consolidated billing.

Innova Hycross: Our innova hycross rent bangalore service offers innova hycross taxi and hycross car rental for smaller family groups, and on a 550 kilometre run the hybrid efficiency makes a genuine difference to the total. Curated tour packages from Bangalore and Mysore are also available across Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey, Thekkady and the wider Kerala circuit.

How to Book a Tempo Traveller for Rent in Bangalore

Booking a tempo traveller for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under five minutes. Follow these four steps.

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

•     Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

•     Share your travel date and your Bangalore pickup location — area, landmark, building, hotel or tech park. Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala and the KIA airport are all routine.

•     Share the exact drop address in Kochi, the number of passengers, and your preferred vehicle tier — Standard AC or Luxury AC. The difference between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi is around forty-five minutes, so the address matters.

•     For airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.

•     For corporate bookings, share your GST number and preferred invoicing format. For premium vehicles, mention the occasion — corporate, wedding or VIP event — so the team can allocate the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

•     Within 2 hours of your enquiry, a written quote arrives by WhatsApp or email.

•     The quote itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate in rupees per kilometre or as a flat package, driver allowance, the expected toll figure, the Kerala interstate permit as its own line, and GST.

•     No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.

•     For corporate clients requiring reimbursement approval, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.

•     If you want to compare two seating sizes, the standard and luxury tiers, or the single-day against the two-day journey, request all the quotes at the same time. Permit charges differ between vehicle sizes, so ask for both figures.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay the Advance

•     Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm by WhatsApp or phone.

•     A 20 percent advance payment on the total fare confirms the booking and holds the vehicle for your date.

•     Pay by UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), by NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer, or by credit or debit card through a payment link.

•     The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.

•     Your confirmation includes the driver name and mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location and the full billing breakdown, all in writing.

•     For Onam, Thrissur Pooram, the December to January peak and long weekends, book well ahead since fleet availability tightens quickly.

Step 4 — Your Driver Arrives Early

•     Your assigned driver reaches the confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before the scheduled departure.

•     For airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate.

•     The vehicle arrives clean, sanitized, fuelled and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings the driver is in formal attire.

•     The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy.

•     During the trip the driver handles all routing, toll payments, the Walayar checkpost and current roadwork diversions.

•     At trip end the balance is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional kilometres or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick booking: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your group size, Bangalore pickup location, exact Kochi drop address and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.

Payment Methods

Tejas Travels accepts all major digital and traditional payment methods for both the advance and the final settlement at trip end.

•     UPI — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM UPI and Amazon Pay. The fastest method, with instant confirmation on receipt. Recommended for all advance deposits.

•     Bank transfer — NEFT, IMPS and RTGS. Used for corporate clients and larger advances. IMPS is instant; NEFT can take up to 2 hours.

•     Credit or debit card — Visa, Mastercard and RuPay, through a payment link sent to your registered mobile or email. Valid for the advance and for full payment.

•     Net banking — all major Indian banks, through a payment link by WhatsApp or email. Preferred for Bangalore IT corporate purchase-order approvals.

•     Cash — accepted for the balance at trip end, with a receipt issued. The advance itself must be digital for the booking to be confirmed.

•     Corporate credit — 30-day credit terms for signed corporate accounts, with monthly consolidated invoicing available.

Payment note: a 20 percent advance confirms your booking and guarantees vehicle availability on your date. No advance means no confirmed booking. A digital receipt is issued within 30 minutes of every payment.

Cancellation Policy

Tejas Travels maintains a fair, transparent and tiered cancellation policy. All terms are communicated in writing at booking confirmation, with no hidden conditions.

•     More than 72 hours before departure — no cancellation charge. 100 percent of the advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days.

•     48 to 72 hours before departure — 10 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 10 percent deduction.

•     24 to 48 hours before departure — 25 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 25 percent deduction.

•     12 to 24 hours before departure — 50 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 50 percent deduction.

•     Less than 12 hours before departure — 75 percent of the total trip fare. Minimal or no refund, depending on the value of the trip.

•     No-show, where the vehicle has been deployed and the group is absent — 100 percent of the total trip fare. No refund; the full fare is payable.

•     Cancellation by Tejas Travels, for breakdown or force majeure — no charge. 100 percent refunded within 2 working days, or an alternate vehicle offered at the same rate.

Special cancellation conditions

•     Long-haul and multi-day bookings: on a 550 km route the vehicle is committed for two to three days, so a minimum 5-day notice is required for a full refund on trips booked more than 7 days ahead.

•     Wedding function bookings: minimum 7-day notice for a full refund. Cancellations within 3 days of the wedding date are non-refundable.

•     Force majeure — monsoon flooding, landslides, bandhs, road closures or government restrictions: 100 percent refund within 2 working days regardless of notice period.

•     Modifications to date, seating or route with more than 24 hours notice: accommodated at no penalty, subject to availability. Note that a seating change may alter the permit charge.

How to cancel: call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your booking reference. Cancellation confirmation within 2 hours, and the refund goes back to the original payment method within the stated timelines.

Refund Policy

All refunds are processed to the original payment instrument used for the advance. No cash refund is issued unless the advance was paid in cash.

•     Cancellation more than 72 hours before departure: 100 percent of the advance paid, in 5 to 7 working days.

•     Cancellation 48 to 72 hours before departure: advance minus the 10 percent charge, in 5 to 7 working days.

•     Cancellation 24 to 48 hours before departure: advance minus the 25 percent charge, in 5 to 7 working days.

•     Cancellation 12 to 24 hours before departure: advance minus the 50 percent charge, in 7 to 10 working days.

•     Cancellation by Tejas Travels for operational reasons: 100 percent of the advance paid, in 2 working days on priority processing.

•     Trip shortfall where actual kilometres fall below the minimum: proportional credit on the excess, settled at trip end against the final balance.

•     Billing error or overcharge: the full overcharged amount, in 2 to 3 working days after verification.

•     Duplicate payment: the full duplicate amount, in 2 to 3 working days after confirmation.

Refund by payment method

•     UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm): refunded to the UPI-linked bank account within 3 to 5 working days.

•     Credit or debit card: refunded to the originating card within 5 to 7 working days.

•     Bank transfer: refunded to the originating account within 3 to 5 working days, with account details re-confirmed before processing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kochi Tempo Traveller

The bangalore to kochi distance is around 545 to 555 km via NH 44 to Salem and NH 544 through Erode, Coimbatore, Walayar, Palakkad and Thrissur. A loaded tempo traveller takes 10 to 11 hours with two proper halts, and currently closer to eleven given active roadworks on parts of the corridor. The alternative through Mysore, Bandipur and Kozhikode runs longer and slower, and we use it only when the itinerary calls for Wayanad.

For one or two people, fly. It is 550 km with an hourly service and we will tell you so. For a group the arithmetic genuinely changes: fifteen air tickets, two airport transfers at each end and excess baggage on a family carrying more than an aircraft allows adds up quickly against one vehicle that collects you at your door. Driving also makes sense when the group includes elderly travellers for whom two airports are worse than one long car journey, when you want Athirappilly or Coimbatore or Thrissur on the way, or when you are relocating. If any of those apply we would suggest splitting the drive across two days.

For eight to thirteen passengers the 12 or 13 seater at Rs 22 per km is the best value and the easiest vehicle to park in the city. For fourteen to eighteen, the 17 or 18 seater is right, and on a wedding or relocation booking the luggage capacity usually decides it regardless of headcount. One thing to be clear about: a tempo traveller does not go into the Fort Kochi lanes. We park at the edge of the quarter and the group walks, and the public ferry between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi is better than driving around in any case. Beyond eighteen passengers we would move you to a mini bus rental in bangalore vehicle.

Tempo Traveller fare starts from around Rs 28,000. Two-day journeys broken at Coimbatore or Thrissur, and Kerala circuit itineraries taking in Munnar or Alleppey, are quoted on the day-wise plan. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, the expected toll figure, the Kerala permit and GST separately, and arrives in writing within two hours.

Because of garage-to-garage billing, which is the standard commercial basis for outstation hire. The vehicle runs from our Bangalore garage to Kochi and then back again, and on a 550 km one-way route that empty return leg is a very large share of the total even though you are not in the vehicle for it. We state this plainly at quotation stage rather than at settlement. It is also why a round trip is far better value per kilometre than a one-way drop on long routes, and why we will tell you if flying is the more sensible option for your group.

Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax and permit charges, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. Tolls on this corridor are substantial and billed at actual, so ask for the expected figure up front and treat an unusually low all-inclusive quote with caution. The Kerala permit at Walayar is quoted as its own line at actual and scales with seating capacity. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage back to our garage, which on this route is the largest single factor in the price. A 20 percent advance confirms the booking, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes.

Yes. The border is at Walayar on NH 544, just past the Palakkad Gap between Coimbatore and Palakkad. A Kerala interstate permit is required for a commercial vehicle, and we arrange it in advance and show the cost as a separate line in your quote, so there is no waiting for you at the checkpost. Note that the charge scales with seating capacity, so an 18 seater costs more than a 12 seater at the border and it is worth asking for both figures when you compare vehicle sizes. Commercial traffic queues at Walayar can be substantial and it is the one predictable pinch point on the route.

Yes, and it is the single best addition to this journey. Athirappilly is around thirty kilometres east of Chalakudy, which sits on the final ninety-kilometre stretch into Kochi, so the detour costs roughly two hours including time at the falls rather than requiring a separate day trip later. It is the largest waterfall in Kerala and is at its most impressive from June through January, reducing considerably by March. Tell us at quotation stage so the time and kilometres are in the plan, since on an eleven-hour day it cannot be added on the road.

No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on the longest route in our network we recommend it more strongly than on short trips. We also do not operate sleeper bus services, which groups do ask about on a drive this length. The fleet is seated throughout: 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers, 12 to 24 seater minibuses, 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches, 13 to 17 seater Force Urbania, and 4 to 7 seater cars.

September to March, with September and October particularly good in Kochi: post-monsoon greenery, lighter crowds and comfortable weather. April and May are hot and humid on the coast. June to August is the southwest monsoon, which is atmospheric and green but wet, and it is also when Athirappilly is at its most spectacular. If your dates fall near Thrissur Pooram in April or May, expect that city to be very full and plan the halt around it.
