Marudhamalai Murugan Temple
A seventh-century hilltop Murugan temple on a spur of the Western Ghats about fifteen kilometres from the city centre, reached by a winding road with steps for those who prefer to climb. It is one of the significant Murugan shrines of Tamil Nadu and is busy with local devotees rather than tourists, which gives it a very different feel from the larger pilgrimage sites. Visit in the early morning for the light across the plain and to avoid midday heat on the approach. Around ninety minutes covers it including the drive up.
Perur Pateeswarar Temple
One of the oldest temples in the region, on the Noyyal river about seven kilometres from the city, with a history running back well over a thousand years and later additions under the Nayaka rulers. The Kanaka Sabha hall is the highlight, its carved stone pillars depicting figures from the epics in a style that rewards slow looking. Visit for the carving, which is the finest in the immediate Coimbatore area, and because it sees far fewer visitors than Marudhamalai. Footwear is removed at the entrance and mornings are calmest. Allow an hour.
Siruvani Waterfalls and Dam
Around thirty-five kilometres west toward the Kerala border, Siruvani is best known for the quality of its water, long held among the sweetest in India and the source of Coimbatore municipal supply. The falls sit inside a reserved forest and the dam has a viewpoint and garden. Visit between June and December when the flow is strong. This is the one destination here that needs checking before you commit the day - access to the falls area requires forest department permission and is periodically restricted, and arrangements change, so confirm the current position close to your travel dates. The drive out through the foothills is worthwhile regardless.
Vaidehi Falls and the Ghats Edge
A smaller cascade in the Anaikatti hills north-west of the city, reached by a short forest trek from the road and considerably quieter than Siruvani. The surrounding Anaikatti area sits on the boundary of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and holds research institutions and a scattering of quiet resorts. Visit if you want the Western Ghats without crowds and your group is comfortable with a short walk on uneven ground. The falls run properly in and just after the monsoon and reduce to a trickle by March.
Kovai Kutralam, Black Thunder and the City
Kovai Kutralam falls sit near Siruvani and are the more accessible of the two, popular for bathing when the flow is good. Black Thunder, on the Mettupalayam road, is a large water theme park and the standard answer for families with children. In the city itself, the Gass Forest Museum holds an unexpectedly good collection of timber and wildlife specimens in a colonial-era building, and Coimbatore is a serious food city - Kongunadu cuisine, and the textile and jewellery shopping around Cross Cut Road and Oppanakara Street, are reasons in themselves to allow an evening rather than driving straight through.

Mango Capital of Tamil Nadu
The fastest fifty kilometres of the journey: six-lane divided highway with gentle gradients and hill views on both sides, where the car settles into a rhythm and the trip finally feels underway. Krishnagiri arrives around 7:30 AM for a 6:00 AM departure. Krishnagiri is the Mango Capital of Tamil Nadu, and between April and July the roadside Banganapalli and Neelam stalls justify a stop on their own. A ninth-century hill fort is visible from the highway, and the KRP Dam catchment nearby makes a quiet break point. Practically, this is where Chennai-bound traffic peels off at Rayakottai and the road toward Salem thins noticeably. Our drivers usually push on to Salem for the main halt, but Krishnagiri is a reliable fuel and restroom point if you started very early.
Dharmapuri
Gateway to Hogenakkal
Sixty-five kilometres of good four-lane highway running south, the landscape drying out with granite hills in clusters on both sides. Traffic thins considerably after the Chennai exit and this is comfortable, undemanding driving. Dharmapuri is an agricultural district centre known for its mango and tamarind trade. The significant draw nearby is Hogenakkal, around forty-five kilometres east, where the Cauvery drops through a gorge and coracle rides run below the falls - spectacular after the monsoon, but a half-day detour rather than a roadside stop, and not something a straight Coimbatore run absorbs easily. Dharmapuri itself is a fuel and food stop, and it is the last easy one before the Thoppur climb.
Thoppur Ghat - Salem
Steep Climb of NH 44
Thoppur is the one demanding section on this route. The highway climbs steeply through the hills between Dharmapuri and Salem, and although four-laned throughout, the gradient is severe enough that loaded trucks slow to walking pace. Lane discipline deteriorates, overtaking gets optimistic, and a proportion of drivers treat the ghat as a racetrack. Our drivers hold back rather than joining in, which costs a few minutes and is the correct trade. Descending toward Coimbatore, engine braking matters more than the brake pedal, and this is the stretch where an experienced driver on the route is visibly different from one who is not. Avinashi
Ancient Temple Town of Kongu Nadu
Salem is the Steel City of Tamil Nadu, a major industrial centre built around iron ore, and it sits close enough to the midpoint to be the natural halt. There is an excellent cluster of highway restaurants with proper parking and clean facilities, and our drivers know which handle a quick turnaround. Budget thirty to forty minutes and use it properly, because the run beyond is fast and there is little reason to stop again. Leaving Salem the route joins NH 544 and turns west toward Erode and Avinashi - fast four-lane running through the Kongu plains, with the landscape turning to coconut, turmeric and textile country. Avinashi, near the end of this stretch, holds the Avinashi Lingeshwarar temple, an old and architecturally significant Shiva shrine directly on the road that most travellers pass without noticing. Coimbatore

The final fifty kilometres run southwest into the Coimbatore metropolitan area, and the character changes from open highway to a dense industrial corridor. Tiruppur, the knitwear capital of India, lies just off this stretch and its influence shows in the density of textile units and transport depots along the road. Coimbatore sits in the Palakkad Gap, the break in the Western Ghats that explains both why the city is where it is and why its climate is noticeably milder than the rest of the Tamil Nadu plains. The Nilgiris become visible to the north-west on a clear day. Traffic through the outer city builds through the day and the last stretch can take longer than the distance suggests at evening peak. For Coimbatore airport, note it sits east of the centre and is reached without entering the city core, so an airport drop is usually quicker than a city drop from this direction. A 6:00 AM departure with a proper Salem halt puts most travellers in Coimbatore between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

• 24 to 48 hours before departure — 25 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 25 percent deduction.
• 12 to 24 hours before departure — 50 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 50 percent deduction.
• Less than 12 hours before departure — 75 percent of the total trip fare. Minimal or no refund, depending on the value of the trip.
• No-show, where the vehicle has been deployed and the group is absent — 100 percent of the total trip fare. No refund; the full fare is payable.
• Cancellation by Tejas Travels, for breakdown or force majeure — no charge. 100 percent refunded within 2 working days, or an alternate vehicle offered at the same rate.
Special cancellation conditions
• Corporate contract bookings: contract terms govern. Modifications with 48-hour notice are accommodated subject to vehicle availability.
• Peak dates — Mahashivratri at Isha, Pongal, New Year, Diwali and long weekends: minimum 48-hour notice for a full refund. Less than 24 hours is non-refundable.

For a daylight departure with time in hand and a smaller vehicle, it is the better drive.

If your departure or expected arrival falls anywhere near that window, we route you via Salem rather than risk a vehicle full of people reaching a closed checkpoint.
For eight to thirteen passengers the 12 or 13 seater at Rs 22 per km is the best value in the fleet and the more flexible vehicle if you want the Sathyamangalam road. The charge scales with seating capacity, which is worth factoring in when you decide between a 13 seater and an 18 seater, and we quote it before you choose rather than after.
Yes, and it is the single most requested destination on this route. The centre is thirty kilometres west of the city with proper parking for a large vehicle, entry is open to visitors of any background at no charge, and half a day is the right allocation. No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently; for institutional and college groups a group policy is usually inexpensive and often required by the institution. We also do not operate sleeper bus services. The fleet is seated throughout: 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers, 12 to 24 seater minibuses, 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches, 13 to 17 seater Force Urbania, and 4 to 7 seater cars.
