Patala Ganga and the Ropeway
Patala Ganga is the bathing ghat on the Krishna below the temple, reached by a long flight of steps or by the ropeway that runs down the hillside - the descent is several hundred feet and the ropeway is the sensible option for most visitors, particularly on the way back up. Srisailam Dam

When the gates are open after a good monsoon the volume of water is genuinely startling, and it is worth timing a visit for. There is a lit view in the evenings. Note that the dam is a controlled installation, photography is restricted in places and access arrangements change, so follow signage and local direction rather than assuming. Akkamahadevi Caves
Around sixteen kilometres upstream, these limestone caves on the Krishna are associated with the twelfth-century Kannada poet-saint Akka Mahadevi, who is said to have meditated here, and they hold a naturally formed lingam deep inside. The only access is by boat from Patala Ganga, and the round trip takes two to three hours on the water. Visit if you have the time and the day allows - it is not a compulsory stop and some visitors find the caves modest, but the boat journey up the gorge between forested cliffs is the real experience. Boats operate seasonally and depend on water levels, so confirm on the day.
Sakshi Ganapati and Sikharam
Sakshi Ganapati, around three kilometres from the temple, is where by tradition Ganapati records the visit of each pilgrim to Mallikarjuna - the name means the witness, and devotees stop here to have their darshan noted. Srisailam Sikharam, some eight kilometres away, is the highest point in the area and gives a view of the temple gopuram from a distance; tradition holds that sighting the gopuram from Sikharam carries particular merit. The Nallamala Forest

Bagepalli is the last Karnataka town and the Andhra border follows shortly after at Kodikonda. A short detour off the highway here reaches Lepakshi, where the sixteenth-century Veerabhadra temple holds the celebrated hanging pillar that does not quite rest on the floor, extensive surviving mural work on the ceilings, and a monolithic Nandi carved from a single boulder that is among the largest in India. It is a forty-five minute detour and one of the finest Vijayanagara sites anywhere. Penukonda comes next - the fortress city the Vijayanagara empire retreated to after the fall of Hampi, with the Gagan Mahal and hill fortifications still standing. Puttaparthi lies off the highway to the west, the ashram town of Sathya Sai Baba and a destination in its own right. A hundred and fifty kilometres of continuing excellent divided highway through dry Rayalaseema country. Gooty announces itself with its fort - a Vijayanagara and later Maratha stronghold on a steep granite outcrop directly above the road, once held by Murari Rao and taken by Hyder Ali after a long siege. It is visible from the highway and worth looking up for. Kurnool is the pivot of this journey and the point every traveller should understand. It sits at the confluence of the Tungabhadra and the Hundri, it was the first capital of Andhra State between 1953 and 1956, and it is the last substantial city before the road changes character entirely. It is a good road, simply not a fast one. Anyone quoting ninety minutes for the Kurnool to Srisailam section has not driven it, and for a loaded fifteen-seater the figure is at the longer end.
The final approach is restricted. Traffic through the Nallamala on the ghat into Srisailam is controlled by the forest department at night, commonly reported as no vehicles after around 9:00 PM, because this is the core of the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve. Timings are set by the forest authorities and are subject to change, so we confirm the current position before departure. The practical rule is to leave Bangalore early enough that the ghat is cleared with hours in hand rather than planning an arrival that depends on making the gate.
Two, if the party includes elderly travellers or you cannot depart before dawn — and on this route that covers most of the groups who book it. An overnight at Kurnool at 360 kilometres leaves an easy three-hour run the next morning, arriving fresh and in good time for darshan rather than after nine hours in a vehicle. Our Urbania fleet runs from 8 up to 17 seats, and as a working rule you should book one seat more than your headcount — on a nine-hour pilgrimage day with a multi-generational family, that rule earns its keep. What we do is build the day around whatever arrangement you have made — including the early arrival that a good darshan requires — and our drivers know the temple approach, the parking and the ropeway access. We would treat any operator promising guaranteed darshan as part of a vehicle booking with caution, and we would rather say that plainly than let a family assume otherwise.
Patala Ganga is the bathing ghat on the Krishna below the temple, and the descent is several hundred feet — either a long flight of steps or the ropeway that runs down the hillside. For a group with elderly members the ropeway is not optional, and it is worth building the timing into the morning rather than arriving and discovering the steps. The ropeway has its own timings, closes in poor weather and queues build on weekends and festival days. Our drivers know the access and will drop your group at the right point rather than the general area, which on a hot morning with grandparents aboard makes a real difference.

Mahanandi sits near Nandyal on the alternative approach and works best as an overnight halt on a two-day itinerary, with one of the nine Nandi shrines of the region and a set of spring-fed temple tanks. Yes. The road crosses from Karnataka into Andhra Pradesh at Kodikonda shortly after Bagepalli, and an interstate permit is required for a commercial vehicle. We arrange it in advance and quote it as a separate line at actual rather than folding it into the base fare. It scales with seating capacity, so a 17 seater carries a higher permit line than a 13 seater and we show both figures. On payment, a 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your dates, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes. For Maha Shivaratri and other festival periods, book months rather than weeks ahead and expect a higher advance.

Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. We recommend it particularly for large extended-family and temple-committee groups, where a group policy is usually inexpensive and straightforward. On timing: October to March. Rayalaseema and the Nallamala from April to June are severe, regularly crossing the high thirties, and Srisailam sits where the heat settles. Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, is the largest festival of the year here and draws enormous crowds — extraordinary to witness, but queues run to many hours and the town is completely full, so book months ahead or avoid those weeks entirely if you want a calm darshan.
