Idukki Arch Dam and Hill View Park
The arch stands a hundred and sixty-eight metres high across the Periyar gorge between the Kuravan and Kurathi hills, built without buttresses so that the water pressure holds it into the rock - among the first arch dams in Asia and still one of the tallest. Hill View Park above Cheruthoni gives the view down onto it and the gorge, with a garden and a viewpoint, and it operates independently of access to the dam itself. Visit in the morning before cloud builds. Check the current access position before travelling if walking on the dam is the point of your trip.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Dindigul
Lock City of India
The first five hours are the fastest of the journey, on four and six-lane NH 44, and our drivers aim to be past Electronic City before 5:30 AM. On this route more than most, time banked early matters - everything beyond Kumily is hill road and you do not want to be doing it in the dark. The Thoppur ghat is the first gradient of the day and our drivers take it conservatively. Salem is the natural breakfast halt with the best highway restaurants on the corridor. Dindigul, where the route turns west, lands almost exactly at lunch - and the Thalappakatti biryani that originated there is the most famous food stop on this highway.
Kumily
Spice Market Town of the Border
West through Batlagundu into Theni district at the foot of the Ghats, with the mountains close and the country green and hemmed in. The Cumbum valley beyond is grape country - the GI-tagged Panneer Thratchai vineyards run along the road under the wall of the Ghats, which is an unexpected landscape in Tamil Nadu. The climb to Kumily is around thirty kilometres of ghat through forest, and the air changes on the way up - cooler and unmistakably spiced. The Kerala border and the interstate permit come at Kumily, arranged by us in advance. For anyone combining Idukki with Periyar this is where you would stop; Thekkady is four kilometres off the road here.

Idukki
Dam Town and the District Seat
Sixty kilometres of hill road north-west through the heart of the cardamom country, and it is slow going - winding, narrow in places and climbing and dropping continuously, so an hour and a half is realistic rather than the forty minutes the distance suggests. Vandanmedu comes first, one of the largest cardamom auction centres anywhere, then Kattappana, the market town the High Range spice economy runs through. Cardamom under shade trees covers the slopes on both sides of the road for most of this stretch. Cheruthoni and Painavu sit either side of the gorge below the arch - Cheruthoni the dam town, Painavu the district headquarters on the hill above. It is a small, steep, working place rather than a resort, and accommodation is scattered across the surrounding hills rather than concentrated, several on narrow approach roads. Send us the property name at booking and we will confirm access. A 5:00 AM departure puts most travellers in by around 5:00 PM, which is why we generally suggest splitting this journey.

Tempo Traveller Packages for the Bangalore to Idukki Route
Corporate Package
Built for Bangalore IT and manufacturing teams heading to the high ranges for offsites, team outings and annual trips. Includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, a named driver for the full multi-day trip and consolidated monthly billing for registered accounts. The same corporate tempo traveller bangalore vehicle stays with your team across the Cheruthoni, Kattappana and Ramakkalmedu legs, with duty slips signed daily and reconciled against the final invoice. Our corporate travels bangalore desk manages the arrangement end to end, including airport pickups for colleagues flying in.
Family Package
The most common booking on this corridor. Families and small groups of ten to sixteen travelling over four to six days, usually pairing the dam circuit with Thekkady, and often adding Munnar, since all three sit within the same district. The itinerary is built around dam viewing hours and plantation timings rather than driving hours, and the driver is briefed to expect long waits. For families with older parents, the fact that the vehicle reaches every stop rather than dropping the group short of it is the difference that gets noticed.
Budget Package
For groups where cost per head decides the trip. Non-AC 9 to 14 seater tempo travellers, point to point, clean vehicle, verified driver, no frills. Well suited to college groups, parish and community trips and association travel, which make up a large share of Idukki bookings. The tempo traveller per km rate bangalore for the non-AC tier is our lowest, and across a 1,180 kilometre round trip the saving across a full vehicle is significant. Non-AC is a sensible choice here in any case, since the district sits above a thousand metres for most of the itinerary. The budget tier is about specification only, never about maintenance or driver vetting.
Luxury Package
Our premium tempo travellers, with fewer and wider push-back seats, more legroom, better cabin insulation and upgraded interiors. Across nearly 600 kilometres each way with two ghat sections at the end, that specification is practical rather than decorative. Suited to senior management travel and milestone family trips. For a further step up, our luxury urbania rental bangalore option in 13 to 17 seater configuration covers the same route with a monocoque body and a noticeably smoother ride on the hill roads.
Our Vehicle Range in Bangalore
Our ac tempo traveller rental bangalore fleet runs 9, 12, 14, 16 and 18 seater configurations. Every category operates from the same Bangalore base, so a change in headcount after booking usually means a change of vehicle rather than a new booking.
• Tempo traveller — 8 to 18 seater, AC and non-AC, the core vehicle for this route
• Force Urbania — 13 to 17 seater luxury van, the premium alternative on the same corridor
• Mini bus — 12 to 24 seater, AC and non-AC, the largest vehicle we recommend past Kattappana
• Bus — 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches, comfortable as far as Kumily and Kattappana
• Cars — 4 to 7 seater, from Etios, Dzire, Innova, Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross through Fortuner and Commuter, up to Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, Mercedes-Benz S Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost
Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. Every vehicle in the fleet is seated configuration with push-back seats, which is why this route is planned either as a very early daytime start or as a two-day run with a halt at Theni or Kumily, never as an overnight haul. On a trip that finishes with two ghat sections, arriving in daylight with a rested driver is the only sensible approach.
Billing Details — What Is Included and What Is Extra
We quote in writing before you book and the quote itemises every line, so nothing appears at trip end that you have not already approved. A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms the booking.
Included in the Quoted Fare
• Base fare and fuel charges
• Driver allowance
Not Included — Billed Separately at Actuals
• Toll charges and parking fees
• Interstate tax for the Karnataka to Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu to Kerala crossings
• Additional driver bata after 9:45 PM
• GST as applicable
• Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage
Garage-to-garage billing is the standard basis across the organised group transport industry in Bangalore. The meter starts when the tempo traveller leaves our garage for your pickup point and stops when it returns. That distance is already built into the written quote, so the number you approve is the number you settle.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. Vehicle insurance and full statutory driver and vehicle compliance are maintained across the entire fleet.

What Our Customers Say About Our Tempo Traveller Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Idukki Tempo Traveller
The bangalore to idukki distance to Cheruthoni is approximately 590 kilometres via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, Kumily and Kattappana, which is the route we run. That is 12 to 13 hours of driving before meal halts, making it one of the longest single-day runs we operate. Many groups break it at Theni or Kumily and take the hill section the following morning, which we quote the same way. Travelling straight through means a 4:00 AM departure so both ghat sections are driven in daylight.
Tempo Traveller fare starts around Rs 27,300. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
Yes, and this route needs two rather than one. The vehicle crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu near Hosur, then from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at the Kumily check post. Both permits and the associated state taxes are billed at actuals rather than folded into the base rate. We arrange all documentation before departure, so there is nothing for you to organise, and our drivers handle both checkpoints as routine on every Kerala run.
Yes, and this is the main practical reason groups pick it here. Many of Idukki’s stops sit at the end of estate roads, dam approach roads and viewpoint spurs where a full-size coach runs out of turning space, so larger groups end up basing in Kattappana and arranging local transfers. A tempo traveller goes wherever the itinerary goes, from Cheruthoni to Anchuruli to the plantation gates, with no re-planning around the vehicle and no transfer costs.
Public access to the arch dam is controlled and the opening window shifts from year to year, most often tied to the Onam season, with entry passes issued from a counter near the Cheruthoni dam. Because it changes, confirm the current position before you build a day around it. Everything else on the circuit, Cheruthoni, Kulamavu, Hill View Park, Kalvari Mount and the wildlife sanctuary, is open year round, so the trip holds up even if the arch dam itself is closed.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms the booking and holds the specific vehicle on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. The balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance. Kerala dates book out early over long weekends and through the season, so for those a higher advance may be requested.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services, and no vehicle in our fleet is a sleeper. Everything is seated configuration with push-back seats. On this route we would not recommend overnight driving in any case, since it ends with the Cumbum ghat climb followed by narrow hill road through Kattappana to Cheruthoni. An early start, or a two-day run with a halt at Theni or Kumily, is safer and makes for a far better trip.
Four days is the practical minimum: travel down on day one, the dam circuit and Kattappana on day two, one more sightseeing day, and the return on day four. Five or six is better and lets you add Thekkady, roughly seventy kilometres away in the same district, or Vagamon at the western edge. A full-district circuit taking in Idukki, Thekkady and Munnar needs seven days, because the driving between them is slow hill road rather than highway.
Our fleet covers 9, 12, 14, 16 and 18 seater configurations in AC and non-AC, all with push-back seats and overhead luggage racks. For a four or five day hill trip we usually suggest booking one seat above your headcount so bags travel inside comfortably rather than packed around passengers. Idukki also needs warm clothing, which adds bulk, and most groups return with cardamom, pepper and tea from Kattappana. Above eighteen passengers a 20 to 24 seater mini bus is the better option, and it remains comfortable on these roads.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if they wish to be covered. All vehicles carry valid insurance and full statutory compliance, and every driver is verified with a commercial licence and route experience, but personal passenger cover is not part of the booking. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your travel date, Bangalore pickup location, passenger count and day-wise itinerary. A written itemised quote follows within 2 hours. Confirm it, pay the 20 percent advance, and you receive driver details, vehicle registration and the full billing breakdown in writing. Our tempo traveller bangalore enquiry lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
